Guided Auger Boring Project - Queens University Belfast

Project: To install 2 No. 225mm sewer pipes to gradient from new pumping chamber
in front of students union building to 2 manholes in the basement of the building.

Queens University Belfast

Mandella Hall at Queen’s Student Union, which is a basement discoteque, got a complete re-fit which included the construction of a new pumping chamber at the front of the building and installation of 2 new 225mm sewer connections from the chamber to 2 manholes, 1m x 1.5m, in basement for 2 new toilet blocks.

BM 400 set up in temporary works

The drives were 29m and 34m in length. The 7m x7m chamber excavated for the pumping station was to provide a launch platform for Guided Auger Boring Rig – the BM400 is designed to operate from a 2m square or round shaft, so temporary works were required in the excavation to facilitate set up.

On Wednesday 4th August we mobilised to site, set up and completed the pilot-bore for the first drive by evening - 29m, which was right on target to the line and level provided by the Main Contractor.

On Thursday the auger and casings were installed following the line and level of the pilots. Friday the 6th August we took delivery of the 225mm Naylor Denlok Jacking Pipes. These were jacked into place by lunch time Friday.

Monday 9th August the BM400 was set up for the second drive, pilot bore completed, 34m, on target and 22m of augers and casings installed. Tuesday, Augering was completed and Naylor Denlok pipe jacked into place.

Wednesday morning equipment was demobilised from site and pressure test completed.
